Have you Defragmented your HDD???
I just wanted to highlight the advantages that defragmentation has to offer. Regularly defragmenting your drive keeps your harddisk drive to peak of its performance and your windows loads faster and performs better..
What is Fragmentation????
Refers to the condition of a disk in which files are divided into pieces scattered around the disk. Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, creating, deleting, and modifying files. At some point, the operating system needs to store parts of a file in noncontiguous clusters. This is entirely invisible to users, but it can slow down the speed at which data is accessed because the disk drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file.

What is Defragmentation????
Defragmentation is the process of locating the noncontiguous fragments of data into which a computer file may be divided as it is stored on a hard disk, and rearranging the fragments and restoring them into fewer fragments or into the whole file. Defragmentation reduces data access time and allows storage to be used more efficiently. Some operating systems automatically defragment storage periodically; others require that the user occasionally use a special utility for this purpose. Windows 98 comes with a built-in defragmenter as a “system tool” that the user can run. Windows NT did not come with a defragmenter because its file system, NTFS, was designed to minimize fragmentation; however, NT users often find one necessary and several vendors provide defragmenters. Windows 2000 comes with a “light” version of the Diskeeper defragmenter; some users (especially corporate users) use Diskeeper or some other full-function defragmentation program to manage storage efficiency and performance. Windows XP comes with a utility called “Disk Defragmenter.”

Benefits of Defragmenting your Drive:
- Faster access to your files in your harddrive.
- Faster booting of your computer.
- Better overall performance of your drive.
How often should you defragment your drive????
This depends upon the fragmentation of your drive. I recommend you to defragment your drive once in every two weeks for power users and once in a month to normal users.
What the third party tools for defragmenting other than Window’s Own Utility???
Hope this fairly explains why you should defragment your drive…. ![]()

Hey actually i had diskeeper software previously!! but i dont know what for it is used!!!now i know what for it is used!!!thaks shivabond!! ur a great intel!!! the chip is not in ur computer rather inside ur brain!!!!! this month 25th 2 31st for me 5 days holidays!!! in that days i will come to sundarajan’s house.definitely i’ll meet u there!!!
Nice post. There are debates everywhere about the significance of fragmentation on todays system. Some claim that its not going to affect performance since the drives are much more advanced than earlier. On the other hand, sys administrators and substantial computer users say that if drives are faster, file sizes too have grown by bounds and leaps and that fragmentation is a disease that will over time attack each system. Only the time factor varies. In theory NTFS deals with this issue better, but as a home user who has experienced slowdown due to fragmentation i am more inclined to go with the latter school of thought, which still considers this as a serious maintenance issue.
