There are two types of re-entry, ballistic and trajectory. From International Space Station, space shuttles makes trajectory re-entry to earth, while Russian soyuz capsules makes ballistic re-entry. My work is on the ballistic re-entry where ablative thermal protection system is employed.
Americans are presently considering to adopt ballistic reentry (providing ablative Thermal Protection System) for Orion, crew exploration vehicle, for their mission to moon.
