Numeric Digital 600VA Plus UPS Review

Some time back I got myself a Numeric Digital 600 Plus UPS as my old Microtek UPS stopped functioning. In this post I will review this UPS.

So what’s in the box???

Telephone Cable

UPS Monitoring Software CD

UPS to PC Interface Cable

Numeric Family Utility CD (Not that much useful, it contains softwares, sharewares, small games and wallpapers)

Two DVD’s containing the following Movies: The Terminator Judgment Day, Rush Hour 2, American Pie, Rambo 3 (this I liked the most  )

And of course the UPS

Features of this UPS:

Microprocessor Based Design

This UPS contains a microprocessor which ensures highly reliable and accurate operation.

Built-in AVR

The built-in Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) provides regulated clean power for a wide range of input voltage. The input range of the UPS ranges from 140V to 300V, which allows the UPS to work in mains mode even under low & high voltage conditions, thereby extending battery life.

Intelligent Battery Management

This feature prevents the draining of battery by automatically shutting down the UPS when the when the load is very less or if there is no load connected to the UPS while operating in the battery backup mode.

Telephone / Modem Line Surge Protection

This UPS protects your computer from lighting strikes if you happen to connect to the internet via telephone line.

UPS Monitoring Software
This UPS comes bundled with UPS monitoring software which monitors the UPS status and provides useful information like input/output voltages, battery status and percentage of connected load. You can even schedule the UPS to switch ON/OFF at the specified time.

Performance of the UPS:

I tested the backup of this UPS using the following configuration (load).

Intel Pentium D 930 3.0 Ghz which consumes 135w at peak usage.

On Gigabyte 945G based motherboard.

Three Hard Disk drives.

Two Optical Disk drives.

One Floppy Disk drive.

Samsung 17″ CRT Monitor .

Creative 2.1 speakers.

Lexmark Z13 Printer.

The backup time I got with the above mentioned load is around 14 minutes which is a good figure for a 600VA ups.

UPS Monitoring Software:

The UPS comes bundled with Winpower 2.0 UPS monitoring software which is quite user friendly and comes with useful features.

Features of the Monitoring Software:

  • Display of Input and Output voltages.
  • Display of battery status
  • Automatic shutdown in case of low battery
  • Scheduling the operation of UPS.
  • The best part is that we can switch off the audible alarm of the UPS, which gets triggered when power goes off. I liked this feature because of irritating beeps which the UPS makes in the event of power failure.

See below the screenshots of the UPS monitoring software. (Click them to Enlarge)

UPS in Normal Operation Mode

UPS in AVR Operation Mode

UPS in Battery Backup Mode

UPS Audible Alert Control Setting

UPS ON/OFF Schedules Setting

UPS Shutdown Parameter Setting

Verdict / Conclusion:

Going by the performance, features this UPS has to offer and the price I give it 4.5/5. This UPS is available for Rs.1700 in Chennai.

Pros:

  • Good build quality
  • Right Pricing
  • Large service Network
  • Built with modern features.
  • Excellent UPS monitoring software
  • Sufficient battery back-up

Cons:

  • None. :-)

Here are some photos of the UPS which I took using my Nokia 6630. The images are not very clear as it was taken in dark environment. Click on the images to enlarge them.

Your feedback would be very much appreciated. By the way what UPS do you use???

  1. Hi dude, can you tell me how much it costs? Am currently using RP2 for my office system which gives back up for 6-8 hours and costs 12000. It contains RP2 invertor, one exide battery (which alone cost 6500 bucks!) and one trolley for easy transportation.
Am using flock to browse the web now. Know what? Its now very easy to blog to my favorite wordpress as it is inbuilt in it. You can get it for free. Tell me how it works!

  2. The UPS used in your office is meant for many computers and the backup they provide is for long time. The UPS which I mentioned is for home users who want backup for 10-20 minutes. This UPS costs around Rs 1700.

  3. No dude, RP2 is for single pc and not for many computers. Only one computer and one printer can be connected (maximum) at a time. We have bought two RP2’s for two systems here in our research room.

  4. @Srinivasa - Fx 1.5.0.6 is out, update :]

I dont have a USP since 7 months now, but even on abrupt restarts my HDD is doing fine, NTFS and ReiserFS XD

  5. Am still wondering why it shows Fx 1.5.0.6 Qwerty! Am actually using “flock” which is extremely easy for blogging and latest version built on mozilla. Any updates available? Let me check it up. Thanks.

  6. Sorry, read it as 1.5.0.4

  7. Am sorry again Qwerty, I misunderstood your comment totally (bit dizzy). Am checking for an update. Thanks for notifying me.

  8. Lol no problemo, I thought you were using Fx itself, Flock uses its engine so I think it gets recognized as it itself.

Its not out for Ubuntu yet, and am planning to increase my Opera usage on it hehe, its kinda cooler on Linux and I’ve grown a wee bit tired of Fx now.

  9. Juz updated. Even “about flock” from help menu shows as Fx1.5.0.4 only. Think flock is another sib of mozilla.

  10. Hi,

Could you please send me its manual as i have an old Numeric 600 Plus UPS and don’t have a manual . sent it on my Email ID

    Please

    Thanks
    Rajesh

  11. Rajesh there is no soft copy of the manual with me. So you can contact the manufacturer for the same.

  12. Why does one need a manual for a USP :?

  13. I guess rajesh wants the specifications….

  14. hai….please help me on connecting ups to computer…in my windows xp i cannot configure that software winpower because i cant act as administrator…i have tried my administrator password but it says u must have super user password and nothing worked… please tell me how to configure my port and how to establish a connection in winpower for windows xp….. thanx in advance

    The default password is: Administrator

    Did you try this software…..

  17. Welcome to my blog Balaji. By the way where do you live?

  18. Hi Shiva,

I am Vignesh, now in Bangalore, home is in Madurai. Nice review. I was also using Numeric 600 for the past 4 years, but just now it got retired. I am once again going for Numeric, and it costs about Rs. 1900 with all taxes here in Bangalore.

    Nice to see your blog.

    Regards,
    Vignesh

  19. Welcome to my blog Vignesh. Numeric is one of the best ups you can find.

  20. Never buy Numeric.
They exploit the customers very well.
My UPS underwarranty , but they failed to do it for free.
Charged me 280 Bucks for changing a Fuse at the back which costs 2 Rs at a local shop nearby.
Customer Service Sucks totally.Better go for APC or some other brand.

  21. If you ask me one area where companies that are located in india needs to improve, i’d say it is in the service sector.

    @Sudarshan:
Not only ‘numeric’ for that matter, no company bothers their customer once the sale is over and the bill is settled.

  22. Hi Shivaranjan.Thx for providing such a wonderfull blog.I bought myself a numeric 600 plus yesterday.Very good UPS with all it’s best features.I would like to know about the charging procedure of ths UPS…Do we have to switch the button of the UPS on to recharge or it’s ok to switch it off? Yesterday i kept only main switch on and kept UPS switch off….i think it did not charge, can you please explain?

  23. Hi Prashant

you need to connect the UPS to the mains and press ups button, the UPS should show the green light.
I think it takes around 12 hrs to charge.

  24. Hi Sudarshan.Thx for the quick reply.I have a router connected to my UPS aswell. If i keep the green light glowing the router will be on…will it get charged if the router is on?

  25. np it will work

  26. Thx once again buddy. You rock!!

  27. your welcome

  28. Hi sudarshan. The UPS even charges when only the mains is on and there is no need of keeping the green light glowing.I had connected another UPS to my system and kept numeric UPS on with serial cable plugged in without any load. And tested it ..by keeping the green light glowing there is still 2% load on UPS..But keeping it off will make the output 0% and the diagram in monitoring software shows the power flow from mains to battery directly when the green light is off.If its on then the digram shows the battery intermediate. So just wanted to confirm you about this fact that it also charges by keeping the green light off .I hope this will be helpfull for you.

  29. Hi…I’m facing a very strange problem. After formatting the system i have installed winpower software for my numeric UPS..but the software is not able to connect to my UPS…What could be the reason? Have u faced the same problem?

  30. I just got one of these for 1900. The problem is the software. ITS IN JAVA!!!! All its components takes up 50 MEGS of RAM. Unbelivable!!! The UPS looks very similar to the powercom IND650 including the case but havent looked inside to see if its the same but it feels the same. I know the older ones were not the same. I dont like pwoercom any more since they blow up when the power goes. When my 650 went I got the IND1000 and first it blew up the TV when I switched it on. Then it blew up when th epower went out. Got it repaired when I took it into the place I bought it from he was like well this has 1 year on site warrenty so why bring it in. Took it again today after it blew up last night when the power went out. Its very heavy comparetevely. Its not bad for the price except the monitoring software. Why would I want to waste 50 megs of ram and slow down the system so much to run a UPS monitoring software? UPSMON that comes with powercom is under 5megs and barely takes up any CPU. But that dont work with this one. But if they are the same UPS then there might be some way to get it working.

  31. Hi AlienTech, anyways my problem got solved..It was with the installation. The software and the UPS works like a charm.

  32. Well seems like they shipped it with V1 which was crap. Would always lock up and since I had other java apps runnign as well, it woudl run out of memory and all kinds of things. And I jsut bought this today.

Can you believe that numeric does not have a software update download area? Maybe if I call them up first. But you can get it from the people who write it. Seems V2 is more stable. At least it came up right away while the other one took a minute to show up and then was very slow to run.

  33. I lost my UPS manual. Is there any way to find serial number.

  34. Hi Shiva,
I just bought a Numeric 600VA UPS but my PC is not able to detect the UPS through the Serial Connection (or through winpower manager ups search). Could you help me with what the problem could be? Also, I got version 1.0 with the ups. Can you tell me where I can get version 2.0 of the software?

    Thanks
    Raj

  35. Hi Shivaranjan,

Very nice review. I need an UPS too and after reading your review I’m thinking about Numeric. Your PC config is somewhat similar to mine except that I’ve got a graphics card and a 15″ monitor. But I’m going to upgrade it to 17″ soon. Do you think 600VA will be enough for the following config?

    Pentium D 820 2.8GHz (135watt max too)
    Intel 945 motherboard
    1 SATA2 HDD
    2 optical drives
    2 X 512MB DDR2 Ram
    Geforce 7300GS graphics card
    LG 15″ monitor ( 17″ soon)
    ADSL router

    Hoping for a reply :)

  36. A 600VA ups is enough for you Kaushik. :)

  37. Thanks :)

  38. Hello Shivaranjan,

Finally I bought a Numeric 600VA UPS. But the UPS to PC interface cable did not came with the package. No other accessories except the family utility DVD. I searched for a RS232 cable at a few shops but didn’t find it. Now I want to know what type of cable does it require. Does it connect to the PC through the serial port or can I connect to the PC through the USB port? Serial-to-USB converters are available but no Serial-to-Serial cables.

    Thanks. :)

  39. I have a 17monitor and 4 SATA HD’s and an AMD3000 and it shows like 35% load with the UPS. The powercom1000 showed a load of under 20%…
The monitoring cable is not a regular RS232 cable. But it seems to be the same as the powercom one since it seems to work with the numeric as well, but not the software.

New V2.12 its about 40 megs… for a monitoring software? heh!!

    http://www.ups-software-download.com/winpower/data/Windows/Winpower_setup_Windows.exe

My powercom blew up again! So took it back and told them I needed it exchanged since the warrenty will run out in a month and its sure to go out just then again. Since I bought so many things form them they said they will try… I like the numeric, at least for now… Seems to work just like other good UPS’s… I like the powercom due to the software only, if I get another one that works then I will go back to it. I cant waste ot much CPU and memory for a UPS monitoring program. Why didnt numeric make an interface for th ewindows built in software? Should have been so simple. It is simple since I have used like clientmate which is less than 1 meg in size and showed the same functions except network stuff. Who wants network access for a home UPS????

  40. Hai Shivaranjan,
I bought numeric 600 plus, why it’s only backup less than 5 minutes just for 1 cpu without monitor, i already charged it for more than 12 hour, with ups power on and off too,but is’s still backup just for less than 5 minutes. When i saw winpower, it’s said that ups will shut down in 10 minutes countdown, but the fact is, before the number get 6 the power is off. is that any problem with my UPS ? thanks for your advise

  41. Rafeeq-
If this is the case then I would advice contact Numeric Customer support. Seems like your battery is not performing upto the mark.

  42. thank’s for your reply, i already ask the CS to fix it, and now it’s ok. thw battery is bad, and they changed the battery for free. thnk you. I recomended the ups for my company. i’m from jakarta. thx anyway.

  43. Hi all,

Anyone that buys a Numeric UPS is either very brave or on drugs.
They are rubbish and not worth 2 cents.
I have now blown two power supplies due to them.
The problem lies in the huge spike it creates when switching to battery power.

The software is also very buggy and absolute crap.
I did manage to “spy” on the comms between the ups and the pc and it comes down to a few simple text commands.
So who would want to have all the java overhead just to see some pretty pictures and graphical representation of parameters.
Anyone interested in the commands leave a message here, although I think you would be crazy in using such rubbish products.

On the plus side they make very good boat anchors.
    My rating 0/5

  44. Dave-
Looks like you had a hard time with Numeric. Did you approach the customer care. The problem seems to be alone with your UPS I guess you need to check out incoming power supply to UPS many it has got some problem (this is only suggestion).

I have been using this for long time and it is one of the best UPS that I have seen in the market.

  45. Hello Shivaranjan,

I did contact local agent and as expected they immediatly went into defensive mode by telling me I must have done something wrong.
Luckily I also bought my pcs from same agent and he replaced the blown power supplies immediatly.
Quite strange considering “I must have done something wrong”!!!!
Anyway I sent the other 3 UPS’s back and will now buy another brand as several things bother me about the Numeric one:
    1) There is no mention of EN50091 and EN62040 which are the two main standards governing UPS design and operation.
    2) The output spike is indicative of a bad design and I can no longer trust it.
    3) The UPS serial port always returns “garbage” back on the first attempt at communicating with it.Only after the second attempt does it return meaningful data. Why?
Again I believe this is down to a bad design which is “hidden” from normal users by the bloatware supplied with the UPS.
Try connecting to it with your own app and you will see what I mean.
I have tried more than one UPS and they all do it.
All in all I am very dissapointed with the product and would most certainly not recommend it to anyone.
I guess the saying is true….you get what you pay for!!!!

  46. I like the product .Coordination is very poor for any kind of support .product is performing well.

  47. Greetings Satheesh,
    Are you at Number 42?

  48. dude… my ups doesnt wrk properly wen power goes off… it says..”ups service is currently stopped”…wat do i do?

  49. Can any one help on connecting the numeric 600 digital ups to system,i connected it with the given specifications but it doesnt works please help!!!!!

  50. Hi, Do you known the comm communication protocol to write interface program to the UPS by overself to make UPS on/off.

  51. Hi I am using the same UPS connected to my system. But i am facing a problem in this… my system gets restarts or sometimes even gets shutdown when there is Power fluctuation….. During Power fluctuation my UPS goes to battery mode and then to online mode… But it doesn,t show Fault mode… any one have idea on this…
