Hibernate Fix for Windows XP SP2 for Computer’s with More Than 1GB RAM

ADVERTISEMENTS

If you happen to use a computer with more than 1GB of RAM coupled with Windows XP SP2, then you will have trouble putting your computer to hibernation. You may get this message, “Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API”. When you experience this problem, the hibernate feature is not available on the computer until you restart the computer. I was facing this problem because my computer has got 2GB of RAM and putting it to hibernation was causing me trouble. Well you need not worry about it any more as Microsoft has issued a patch for this problem.

You can download this patch from Microsoft’s support.

  1. I hibernate my PC usually when there is a Power Cut and I need programs and windows all open as they are. Even if I play a Game, I will minimize it and hibernate my PC.

Hibernation used to take only a few seconds in my last Windows XP installation.

But after the recent Windows XP installation, Hibernation takes a long time to complete. Any ideas why?

In my last installation, I did not have Norton AntiVirus installed, so I suspect it to be the reason why Hibernation is currently slow. I am gonna try upgrading to NAV 2006

NAV 2007 ia still in beta stage :(

  2. May be Norton antivirus is causing problems. Try Disabling norton antivirus and then hibernating may be there should be some improvement. Try using Nod32 antivirus, it is very resource friendly and effective.

  3. No thanks, I prefer only one AntiVirus (currently) even though it is heavy on Resources – Norton AntiVirus

  4. I meant uninstall Norton Antivirus and then you can try Nod32.

  5. Hi,

I read the info about this hotfix and am going to try it. Howver, I seem to have a different flavour of this problem (?). When I hibernate (sleep button), the system goes into hibernation fine but ALWAys within about 10-50 seconds, it wakes back up automatically. Any clues?

    Thanks

  6. Are you trying to hibernate or put your system to stand by. Going by your description it seems that you are putting system to stand by. Can you be a little more clear on the problem you got.

  7. i have another problem with hibernating, hope you dont mind be butting in.

    I have two laptops DellD820 with 1GB of ram, Del I8500 2gb

When i select start->turn off computer

i dont even get the option to enter ‘Stand By’ anymore…

I noticed this after a windows update (about 1wk ago), coincidence?

  8. Hi

In my computer ( I am using 1 GB of RAM) when i press the power button of my computer, a screen saying Windows is Hibernating appears but in notime it returns back to desktop without doing anything.

Even suspend is also not working. It is hanging my computer.

and Shutdown is taking very large amt of time to shut down. Can you help me?

    Madhu

  9. Hi,

I have the same problem stated here:

In my computer ( I am using 1 GB of RAM) when i press the power button of my computer, a screen saying Windows is Hibernating appears but in notime it returns back to desktop without doing anything.

    I use:

HP Compaq dx 2200, dual core, 1GB RAM

    Milan

  10. My relatively new HP XP computer has worked fine for over a year. Suddenly, when I am working the screen goes dark (as though the computer were hibernating). I can press the standby key and I get a message that the PC is entering the “powersaving mode”. Moving the mouse now brings up my desktop, but often only for a few seconds before is goes dark again. Often don’t even have time to click on anything. I have gone into power settings and told it never to enter standby move and never to hibernate, but that had no effect.

  11. A bit of a bump :P
    @ Clyde
This is a common problem, the backlight of your screen is probably turned off by your power settings, causing you to see a black screen. You could try disabling the option to turn off your screen after a while, or when this problem occurs again press FN+F5 or FN+F6 (at least that’s where those buttons are on my laptop) a couple of times.

Just posted this in case it may be useful to someone (Clyde probably got a new computer by now xD).
