ADVERTISEMENTS

I use a freeware utility called HD Tune to get information about my hard drive and to benchmark it. Using this utility you can do the following:

  • Benchmark your hard disk
  • Find information about your hard disk
  • Find your hard disk’s health status
  • Scan for bad sectors in your hard disk.

Benchmarking your hard disk drive:
You can benchmark the following parameters of your hard disk drive: transfer rate, burst rate, access time and cpu usage.

Finding information about your hard disk drive:
The following information about your hard disk drive can be found: supported features, serial number of the hard disk, Model no of hard disk, amount of cache supported, temperature of your hard disk, firmware revision and interface standard.

Knowing your hard disk drive’s health status:
Displays the health status of your hard drive by using SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology).

Scan for bad sectors in your hard disk:
Till now this is the best and simplest utility that I have come across for scanning bad sectors in hard drives. I found out bad sectors in my previous 250GB hard disk using this utility and I even cross checked its results with Seagate seatools.

Give me your feedback regarding this freeware utility.
