Intel will soon announce a chip capable of transferring data via photons rather than the conventional wires (electrons). Since these chips are using photons (light) as the medium for data transfer, these chips can attain as high as 40GB/s of data transfer rate.
How these chips transfer data using the photons present in light:
The chip is based on a technology that allows Intel to amplify lasers in silicon and is said to now use an Indium Phosphide-based laser, which can endure higher temperatures than initial test lasers.
