AMD 65nm Quad Core Altair to Take on Intel Quad Core Yorkfield
AMD’s next generation 65nm quad core desktop processor based on K8L architecture will be named Altair and will debut in Q3 2007. Altair is expected to clock between 2.7GHz to 2.9 GHz along with 4.0 GHz HyperTransport 3.0. All the four cores will have independent 512KB L2 cache and shared 2MB L3 cache. The quad core series that AMD will launch in the third quarter next year will be available in two variants: Athlon 64 FX and Athlon 64 X4; as of now the expected pricing of processors is not known.
My View:
Looks like Altair will go head on with Intel Yorkfield which is also expected to debut at the same time. Yorkfield will be right match for the K8L based Altair as they both are native quad core chips. I hope to see some stiff competition in quad core desktop processor segment soon; as far as my quad core upgrade plan is considered I will wait until some benchmark results of the K8L architecture are published.
