NEC Releases Chip for Blu-ray HD DVD Combo Drives

by Shivaranjan on October 11, 2006

Since no one can see an end to the present HD DVD and Blu-ray format war, NEC has launched a chipset that will support both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. Previously it was rumored that Pioneer would come with a dual format combo drive but it never materialized. The drives that would be built using this chipset are expected to be expensive since the dual format combo optical pick-up lens is still under development so initially these combo drives will use two separate lenses.

So we can expect hybrid drives from NEC soon as NEC itself is in optical drive manufacturing business. I am definitely in favour of hybrid combo drives as I want best of both worlds. ;)
