Improve Skype Video Call Performance by Port Forwarding

ADVERTISEMENTS

I have been using Skype for quite sometime and recently I have started using the video call function that Skype provides but I was not very happy with the performance of the video call until port forwarded the port that is being used by Skype.

You can find the port that is being used by Skype in Tools>Options>Advanced>Connection (for Ver.3.2.0.148).

After I port forwarded the ports used by Skype then there is a drastic improvement in the video quality of my video call. I have already written a post on how to port forward Airtel 220BX modem.

Try port forwarding your Skype port and let me know your experience.

  1. can this be done using a Linksys WRT400N?

  2. will this work for other wireless routers also?

  3. Hi, pretty much every router out there is capable of port forwarding. You can usually find the option under the NAT settings in the control pannel of your router or modem/router and it should be clearly labled. Port forwarding is done by specifiying which port you want to be open and which internal host it is going to. for example I like to play a game called starcraft which uses port 6112. so i forward port 6112 TCP and UDP to my computer which is 192.168.1.x

doing this gives me a much quicker connection to the game online.

  4. Port forwarding is especially helpful in many applications as more and more households have multiple computers sitting behind a NAT router. It is also very common for these routers to support UPNP which will allow applications like Skype to tell the router to forward the ports to the correct machine. This save you the hassle of changing these settings every time you want to use that application on a different computer.

Simply check your router’s control panel or settings page for the UPNP option and make sure it is activated.
