Ubuntu Linux: How to Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope from Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
We have already discussed how to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, in this post let us discuss how we can upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope from Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. There are lot of methods to upgrade Ubuntu but this post is limited to two methods that are most popular and these two methods we have used extensively.
How to Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope from Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
The two methods that we are going to discuss are upgrade using Ubuntu update manager and upgrade using the Alternate CD. Upgrading using the Ubuntu update manager is useful when you have to update only one computer as the entire the entire update packages are downloaded over the Internet and installed. You should opt for upgrade using Alternate CD if you plan to upgrade multiple computers as you don’t have to update the entire distribution again and thereby saving you Internet bandwidth.
Important Note: Before you start the upgrade process backup all your data.
Upgrade using Ubuntu Update Manager
To start the upgrade process launch the terminal using Alt+F2 and enter the command below:
sudo apt-get update

Once this is done now using the command below upgrade Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get upgrade

These two above commands will install all the updates for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, now that this has been completed we are now ready for the distribution update. Now go to Start>>System>>Administration>>Update Manager, now the update manager will be launched where you can see a message which reads ‘New distribution release ‘9.04’ is available’ and also you can see the upgrade button on clicking which upgrade process will start.
Now you will be presented with a screen in which the release notes are provided, after you have gone through the release notes click the upgrade button in the bottom right of the screen.
Below are the screens that you will encounter during the upgrade process.

The update manager alerts you about the packages that are going to be removed, new packages that will installed and packages that are going to be upgraded. Make sure that you close all open applications and documents, now continue with the upgrade process.



After all the packages are downloaded the installation starts.


After the installation completes the cleaning up operation is executed.

Now Ubuntu again alerts you about the packages that are going to be removed which have become obsolete, hit the remove the button to remove those packages but if you would like to keep them then you can also keep them.

After this is completed you will be prompted to restart

That is it the now after you reboot you can boot into shiny new Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Desktop.
Upgrade using the Alternate CD
First download the Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope alternate CD from here and burn the ISO file that you to a CD. To trigger the upgrade process launch the Terminal using Alt+F2 and enter the following command:
gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"
The above command will trigger the update process and Ubuntu will ask to include the latest update, you have the choice to accept or reject. It is highly recommended that you include the latest updates.

The upgrade process has now started and now you will be encountering the following screens:



The update manager alerts you about the packages that are going to be removed which are also listed, new packages that will installed and packages that are going to be upgraded. Make sure that you close all open applications and documents, now continue with the upgrade process.


After all the packages are received the installation begins and then followed by the cleanup operation.

Now Ubuntu again alerts you about the packages that are going to be removed which have become obsolete, hit the remove the button to remove those packages but if you would like to keep them then you can also keep them.

After this is completed you will be prompted to restart.

That is it the now after you reboot you can boot into shiny new Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Desktop.
