How to Root Samsung Galaxy S II (GT-I9100)

by Shivaranjan on June 10, 2011

Got your new shiny and screamingly fast Samsung Galaxy S II and wondering how to root? I got mine recently which is the Indian version and comes shipped with kernel XWKE8. This guide will explain how to root your Samsung Galaxy S II:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S II micro usb to USB data cable
  2. Odin software. If you don’t have get it from here.
  3. CF root Kernel based on your Kernel and firmware. In this case we will be using XWKE8. You can download the corresponding version of  your CF root kernel from this thread.
  4. Drivers to be successfully installed using the Kies software available for Galaxy S II. You can download the Kies software from here.
  5. Windows XP/Vista/7
  6. Samsung Galaxy S II Smile

If you follow this procedure you may damage / brick your phone and even void your warranty. If you don’t know what you are doing then it is recommended that you don’t follow this guide. Shivaranjan.com will not be responsible for any damage that may arise by following this guide. Proceed at your own risk.

How to Root Samsung Galaxy S II ( Indian version) GT-I9100

Step 1:

Unzip the CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip file which you downloaded from step 3 of Prerequisite mentioned above. In this case it would be CF-Root-SGS2_XW_ODD_KE8-v3.7-CWM3.zip as my phone runs on the kernel XWKE8. Extract the .tar file which is using the archive manager of your choice, for this post I used winzip to extract the tar file from CF-Root-SGS2_XW_ODD_KE8-v3.7-CWM3.zip

Step 2:

Make sure your Samsung Galaxy S II is not connected to the computer through the USB data cable.

Step 3:

Start Odin app and point it to the tar file that you extracted in step 1 and make sure you have checked the PDA check box. Don’t tamper with any other check boxes and the screen should like as shown below. Make sure that Re-partition check box is NOT checked.

Step 4:

In this step we will put the Galaxy S II in download mode. To put the phone in download mode, power off your phone first and then press lower volume key + home button + power button simultaneously. You would be presented with a warning screen that says a custom OS can cause issues. The phone will ask you to press the volume up key to continue to download mode or press the volume down button to cancel proceeding to download mode and restart the phone. Since to flash the CF Root kernel we need to use the download mode, make sure that you choose volume up button.

After you have pressed the volume down key the phone will enter the download mode as shown below:
